How to Reduce Cat Litter Mess

As a busy pet owner, my goal is to spend time enjoying my cats rather than cleaning up after them. Of course, I have to clean up after them anyway. It’s not like they can clean their own cat box. But, I’d rather keep the extra work to a minimum when possible. The litter box tends to be the one area of cat ownership that takes the most time. Besides that, they are rather self-sufficient creatures. Here are a few things that can be done to make cleanup quicker.

Use a Litter Mat

Using a cat litter mat under the litter box is a great way to reduce the mess. Any litter that gets kicked out of the litter box ends up on the mat rather than being kicked all over the room. When it’s time to clean up, lift up the litter box and shake the mat outside. It also helps eliminate how much litter the cats track all over the furniture and the rest of the house.

Odor Control

Even when you clean the box regularly, there is usually some sort of odor left behind. Use a cat litter that is scented to keep the odor down. Be sure you look for a naturally scented cat litter rather than one with added chemicals and fragrances that aren’t good for your pet or your family. My daughter and I both have asthma and strong perfumes can be a problem at times.

As I said above, my daughter and I have asthma.
