How to Reduce Cat Litter Mess

As a busy pet owner, my goal is to spend time enjoying my cats rather than cleaning up after them. Of course, I have to clean up after them anyway. It’s not like they can clean their own cat box. But, I’d rather keep the extra work to a minimum when possible. The litter box tends to be the one area of cat ownership that takes the most time. Besides that, they are rather self-sufficient creatures. Here are a few things that can be done to make cleanup quicker.

Use a Litter Mat

Using a cat litter mat under the litter box is a great way to reduce the mess. Any litter that gets kicked out of the litter box ends up on the mat rather than being kicked all over the room. When it’s time to clean up, lift up the litter box and shake the mat outside. It also helps eliminate how much litter the cats track all over the furniture and the rest of the house.

Odor Control

Even when you clean the box regularly, there is usually some sort of odor left behind. Use a cat litter that is scented to keep the odor down. Be sure you look for a naturally scented cat litter rather than one with added chemicals and fragrances that aren’t good for your pet or your family. My daughter and I both have asthma and strong perfumes can be a problem at times.

Dust Free

As I said above, my daughter and I have asthma. Some cat litters are very dusty so each time you scoop the box, change the litter or when the cats use the box, the dust is thrown back into the air for us to breathe. A dust-free cat litter helps to eliminate airborne dust which can also create a mess when it lands everywhere.

Clumping Litter

Using clumping cat litter helps keep the odor down. When you scoop out the litter, the urine is removed rather than sitting on the bottom of the cat litter box. Of course, not all clumping cat litter is the same. So, it’s important to find one that clumps well or the waste is left behind when the litter clumps crumble.

World’s Best Cat Litter™ offers a variety of clumping cat litters that have concentrated power for a cleaner litter box. They use a patented process that harnesses the power of naturally absorbent corn to create formulas with outstanding odor control, quick clumping and easy scooping. Their special formula uses corn which means it’s planet friendly and will break down.

We started using this cat litter a few weeks ago. I like knowing that it’s made from corn and plant fibers rather than from clay which does not decompose in the landfill. We integrated the new litter in with our old slowly so the cats wouldn’t notice any difference when they used the litter box. It clumps well so there is less mess on the bottom of the box when I scoop it. I also appreciate that it is 99% dust free which really does help with clean up.

The litter is available in select pet specialty stores. Learn more about this cat litter that helps reduce cat litter mess today. Follow them on Facebook to keep up with the latest.

  1. It’s been a while since I took care of my spouse’s cats but I remember the litter did create a bunch of dust. Good to see they make some without the dust now. I too like they use plant fibers and corn to make it.

  2. Thanks for the tip, I will be looking into this cat litter. We switched from the clumping clay litters to a ground walnut shell litter last year because of the dust problem. The dust problem is gone, but the litter is not perfect.

  3. I don’t own a cat but I will definitely forward such an informative article on to my friends who do!

  4. I wish I would’ve known about this when I had my cats because they would always make a mess with the litter, and I tried putting something underneath thinking that would help but it didn’t. I will definitely tell my friend about this if she doesn’t already know about it.

  5. Im going to have to try this. I have just one cat but he makes such a mess. I need to try something that I dont have to constantly keep on top of his messes

  6. Great suggestions. I completely agree that a litter mat is an absolute necessity. It does help control the mess – somewhat. I used to use a hand brush and a dust pan to pick up the mess that never really got the job done. I finally just moved to a small handheld vacuum to get the mess. One thing that has seemed to help – I moved the litter box into a more confined space – between a cabinet and washing machine in my mud room. It leaves less room for my Ginger to kick the litter all over the room.
