How to Choose the Best Cat Tree

Since our cats are inside cats, they spend a fair amount of time in their tree. We want something that’s durable and will entertain them. Of course, you want to check out the best cat tree reviews before you make your decision, but these are a few things that we considered.

Consider the size

You’ll need to consider your cat’s size and weight when choosing a cat tree. A heavier cat will need a cat tree that’s more sturdy than a kitten will. Be sure to look for the best cat tree for large cats. You will also want to be sure that the sleeping platforms are large enough for your cat to sleep comfortably. If you have more than one cat, be sure that there are one sleeping platform and one scratching post per cat.

Check the materials

Be certain that the cat tree is made of wood so that it will withstand your cat jumping on it. A tree that is covered with carpet will last much longer than a tree that is covered with flannel or fake fur. Your cat will want to scratch and knead on the surface regularly.

Make sure that the scratching post is covered with a heavy sisal rope so that it stands up to regular scratching. The cat tree should be assembled using screws instead of nails. Screws can be tightened when they become loose over time. Nails cannot. The sturdiest cat trees will last the longest.

Look at the style

How many levels are there on the tree? Is it easy for your cat to get up to the top? If your cat has arthritis, you’ll want to be sure that the tree has several platforms to make climbing easier. Look at the hiding places and ensure that they are large enough for your cat to get into and out of.

Any extras?

Does the cat tree come with any extras? Are there toys that dangle down for your cat to play with? If so, are the toys removable so they can be replaced with wear? You may want to buy a few extra sets if they are replaceable in case they get worn out.

  1. I have 4 cats who can destroy a cat tree. I keep a few and rotate them around the house. I prefer to buy the carpet and sisal ones. Some I see advertised have cloth covers. Carpet and sisal hold up MUCH better. The spots of carpet they have shredded, I remove and add sisal to that spot so they can get more use out of it before replacing.
